Questions to ask a factory tour host before you book
A pre-booking checklist and the exact questions to put to a factory tour host, with published terms from Ford Rouge, Boeing, Louisville Slugger and Jelly Belly.
What to take away
- Ask who sells the ticket and read their terms before paying. The Henry Ford states that individual ticket sales are final and non-refundable, and says it cannot refund Rouge tickets if vehicles are not being actively assembled. Boeing lets you exchange up to two hours before your slot.
- Ask what will be running on your date. The Ford Rouge plant builds no vehicles on weekends, holidays or at shift changes. Louisville Slugger says bats are made on every tour, every day. Jelly Belly shows video when candy production is limited or stopped.
- Ask for rules in writingbags, phones, photography, minimum height or age. Boeing bars bags, phones, cameras, pens and notebooks from its Everett tour.
- Ask where the tour starts. The Rouge tour starts by bus from the Henry Ford Museum, and visitors cannot drive straight to the plant.
- Ask for the access answer you need, not a general yes. Lowell National Historical Park, for one, publishes specific routes, loan wheelchairs and notice periods.
This list assumes you are a visitor booking a public or small-group tour. The facts below were read on each operator's own page on 25 October 2026, and they change.

Put these to the host, or find the answer on the host's page, before you pay.

The same questions get very different answers. This table uses only each operator's own pages.

Two details deserve a second look. Boeing's FAQ gives its price as a range, so confirm the exact figure at checkout. And the Rouge page says its walkway view is always open, but the question of whether assembly is happening is separate and decides the value of the day.
Where a page is silent, as with Louisville's photography and refund rules, that is a question for the host. Silence is not a yes.
Access questions to ask early
Describe what your group needs, then ask what the route offers. "Is it accessible?" produces a vague answer.
Lowell National Historical Park shows what a good answer looks like. Its accessibility page names the garage and the distance to each building, lists loan wheelchairs at the Visitor Center and the Boott Cotton Mills Museum, notes that boat boarding involves three steps up and three down, and says sign language interpretation needs 14 days' notice. It says nothing on the weave room's noise or ear protection and tells visitors to call 978 970-5000, which is the right use of a phone call.
Boeing asks guests with special needs to contact Future of Flight before visiting. Ask in those terms: how far is the walk, are there steps, where can we sit, can someone leave early. Accessible options for factory tour travelers covers the questions in more depth.
Worked example: rebuilding a Saturday
This is a scenario built from the published terms above, not a reported case.
Case A: a Saturday at the Rouge. The tour is open Monday to Saturday, but the plant builds no vehicles on weekends. The Henry Ford does not refund tickets because vehicles are not being assembled, and date changes are listed for illness or injury only. So the move happens before you buy: choose a weekday, and confirm the plant is not on the shutdown list on the tour page. The Ford Rouge tour rules cover the on-site rules.
Case B: Boeing cancels a Saturday slot.
- Read the confirmation email for the "Reschedule Your Visit" link. Boeing allows changes up to 2 hours before the slot, subject to availability.
- If the link fails, call customer service on +1 800 464-1476. Boeing says it will try to reschedule an emergency if you call at least one hour before.
- If no Saturday slot is free, ask for the nearest weekday. Tours run about hourly on peak days.
- Ask whether the General Admission part of the ticket (the Gallery and Sky Deck) is still valid on the day. The page does not say.
- Keep a second activity in the same area, so the trip does not hinge on one slot.

Keep a record
Editorial suggestion: after each call, mark every answer confirmed, conditional or unknown, and write down the name of the person and the date. A conditional answer needs a second question.
