What a manufacturing museum visit really costs

All fees below were read on each operator's own page on 25 October 2026. They change, so treat them as a snapshot and re-check in the week you book.

Six lines to price before you compare sites

Write a separate line for each item. Do not fold them into one number.

What named sites publish

Sources for each row are listed at the end. Three notes on the table.

Lowell's parking is the detail most budgets miss. The park says parking at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District garage is free with a voucher from the Boott museum, handed out only while the museum is open. Other garages charge posted city rates (National Park Service, Lowell fees). The Lowell mill tours guide covers the park itself.

Hershey's FAQ says the first two hours of parking are free and all-day parking is $60, applying only when Hersheypark is open. Guests with Adventure Bundles are exempt from the fee (Hershey's Chocolate World FAQ). The FAQ calls the Chocolate Tour a ride and lists other attractions as paid tickets. It does not describe a factory walk-through.

The Rouge tour is not guaranteed to show the line running. The Henry Ford says it cannot guarantee full operation, tickets are not refundable if vehicles are not being assembled, and it lists non-production dates including November 26 to 29 and December 24, 2026 to January 3, 2027 (The Henry Ford). Worked example: one family, three cost shapes

A family of two adults and two children, aged 8 and 12, using single published rates. The arithmetic is the desk's own, and the totals exclude food and transport.

Lowell, Massachusetts. Boott museum: 2 adults at $6 plus 2 youths at $3 is $18. Add a canal boat tour (a summer program; adults $12, youth 6-16 $8) and that is $40 more, for $58 in total. The America the Beautiful pass halves the museum fee for the passholder and up to three guests, but the pass costs $80 and the canal tours are excluded, so it does not pay back on one visit. Parking is free with the museum voucher.

Winnipeg, Manitoba. Single rates give 2 x 14 plus 2 x 10, which is CAD 48. The family rate is CAD 30, a saving of CAD 18 (Royal Canadian Mint). Tax is extra and parking is free in the Mint lot. The page says production schedules fluctuate, so not every tour shows live coin production.

Britannia Beach, British Columbia. Single general-admission rates give 2 x 42.95 plus 2 x 24.95, which is CAD 135.80. The posted daily family rate is CAD 152. The page does not explain its footnote on who counts as a family, so ask before assuming the family rate is the bargain. The "museum site" ticket without the underground tour is lower still: 2 x 34.36 plus 2 x 19.96 is CAD 108.64 (Britannia Mine Museum). Online booking closes 12 hours before arrival. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest of these is large because the products differ: a mill museum, a 45-minute mint tour and a 75-minute underground tour with a show. Pick by question first, then by price.

Protective gear on working-plant tours

A museum fee buys a gallery. A live plant tour may require safety glasses, hearing protection or closed shoes.

Under OSHA's general PPE rule, 29 CFR 1910.132(h), a US federal rule, the protective equipment used to comply with OSHA standards must be provided by the employer at no cost to employees. The rule lists exceptions, such as everyday clothing, street shoes and non-specialty safety-toe footwear (OSHA 1910.132). The rule is about employees. It does not say who supplies kit to a visitor, so ask the host when you book. The OSHA visitor access guide explains what the rule does and does not cover.

None of the operator pages read for this guide published a price for visitor gear. Treat it as a question, not a budget line.

Group bookings: what is published and what is not

Published group terms are thin. This is what the operators say:

Worked group note, using single published rates only: 24 students at Lowell's Boott museum at the $3 student rate is $72 before any group arrangement. Whether chaperones are free, whether a deposit applies, and when cancellation becomes non-refundable are questions for the operator. The waivers guide explains the paperwork that sometimes follows.

Editorial suggestion: ask for the headcount band, the rate, the deposit and the cancellation window in one email reply, and keep it with the date.
